Real Men Love sappy Love Songs

A friend recently teared up while sharing with me an experience where a sappy love song (Everything I Do, I Do it For You – Bryan Adams) caught his attention to the point where he questioned his lack of affection towards his wife.

He has been married 25 years. His wife knows that he loves her but he realized, while listening to that song, that he hadn’t looked her in the eyes and told her how much he loved her in a long time. Too long. Not that deep look into her eyes that says “I hope to seduce you” but a look of longing, of looking deep into her soul that pierces the desires of the flesh to go deeper; to look beyond her shortcomings and fears.

The look that reassures a woman that no matter what, she has a man who loves her more than himself, that he would lay down his own desires his own life to give her everything she deserves. That look. I think women like sappy love stories because they can sometimes live vicariously through those situations. Where the script is drawn up so eloquently, coupled with just the right lighting, make-up & situation in which the seemingly perfect leading man can offer that look to the seemingly perfect leading lady and all her cares melt away. Well, my friends, that is a movie. And I don’t know about you but when my wife experiences that in a movie I want her to be thinking “my man looks at me like that. No, better than that because he is real and he is mine.” If it takes a sappy love song to serve as a reminder of why we are men and how to melt away our woman’s fears, if only for a moment, well, so be it. God Bless you, Bryan Adams. Real Men love your sappy love songs.
